My journey with Buddhism began about ten years ago, when I first started meditating on my own. But it was not until several years later that I discovered the profound teachings of Ajahn Chah - and through him, the living lineage that would eventually guide me toward a sangha and a path I could truly call home.

About five years ago, I began listening to Dhamma talks by Ajahn Chah and his students. On my last trip to Thailand, I had hoped to visit Ajahn Achalo’s monastery but it did not work out. When I returned to San Diego, I felt moved to look for a similar place locally - and that is how I found Wat Metta. From my very first visit, it felt like home. I began taking the possibility of ordination more seriously. But since Wat Metta does not currently support bhikkhuni ordination, I started searching for a more supportive environment - and that led me to Dhammadharini.

I visited Dhammadharini in April-May of 2025, and it became clear to me that I want to support the revival of the Bhikkhuni Sangha and help however I can, even if I may not be able to ordain just yet. As laypeople, we benefit so much from the generosity of the monastics who live and teach the Dhamma.

I have recently stepped into the role of Volunteer Coordinator for Dhammadharini. In this role, I will be helping to organize and connect volunteers with tasks that support the community - ranging from offering rides to the monastics, to assisting with events and everyday monastery needs. If you are interested in offering your time or skills, you are warmly welcome to email dhammadharini.4volunteers@gmail.com or text/call me at (858) 255-4605. It takes a lot of unseen care to support a place like Dhammadharini, and volunteers make that possible.

I am deeply grateful to support the community dedicated to the Dhamma and the revival of the Bhikkhuni Sangha.

With gratitude,

Maria Bordyug
