Warm greetings dear Dhamma friends -

We are happy to let you know that monastics from Dhammadharini are planning to attend the Sakyadhita Conference in June in Sarawak, Malaysia

Traveling from Dhammadharini, we plan to have Thavira Bhikkhuni, and Samaneri Ariya Dhammajivi. Mettajivi Bhikkhuni and Vandana Bhikkhuni plan to meet us there, traveling from Cambodia and India, respectively.

If sufficient funds can be raised, we also hope to have a kappiya (an attendant, who can do useful things like use money!) to travel with us. If possible, we also hope for Ayya Adhimutti to be able to join from New Zealand.

Those of us at Dhammadharini have been staying fairly secluded during the time of COVID, and this will give us a great opportunity to travel and re-establish some of our international connections, as well as making new ones! In fact, it has been a number of years since one of the Dhammadharini resident monastics has attended the Sakyadhita Conference.

For those who aren’t familiar with the Sakyadhita Conference, here is more information from the conference website

“The 19th Sakyadhita Conference, themed “Navigating Change: Buddhist Women in Transition,” is aimed at bringing together Buddhist nuns, laywomen, scholars, practitioners, and advocates from around the world.

This significant event seeks to unite those committed to advancing the roles of Buddhist women, providing a platform for the exchange of knowledge, the discussion of key issues, and the fostering of collaboration across cultures. Through keynote speeches, panel discussions, workshops, and cultural programs, the conference will engage individuals passionate about Buddhist studies, gender equality, and the empowerment of women within the Buddhist tradition.

The event also invites those interested in exploring the intersection of tradition and modernity, offering a unique opportunity to connect with a global community dedicated to shaping a more inclusive future.”

This will be the first time to attend the conference for Mettajivi Bhikkhuni, Vandana Bhikkhuni, and Thavira Bhikkhuni.

Samaneri Ariya Dhammajivi attended last year as a lay woman, and this year will be presenting her paper, “Gratitude and Taking Initiative: Navigating Change as a Buddhist Woman in Transition.”

Generous donors have already pledged funds to cover a significant portion of the expenses. We estimate that an additional $3,000 would allow all of the hoped-for attendees to join.

Are you planning to attend the Sakyadhita conference this year? If so, please let us know, we would love to connect with you there!

Please note your donation as being for “Sakyadhita Conference”
